China has warned that President Xi Jinping could pull out of a planned White House meeting with President Donald Trump if Washington approves additional weapons sales to Taiwan, The Telegraph reported Saturday.
Xi is expected to meet Trump in Washington on Sept. 24 in what would be their third face-to-face meeting in a year, but Beijing has again made clear that Taiwan remains a "red line" in relations with the United States, according to The Telegraph, citing multiple sources who spoke to Japan\'s Kyodo News.
The sources said Beijing has threatened to cancel the meeting if the United States approves new arms sales to the self-governing island before the summit.
Neither China nor the White House has publicly announced such an ultimatum, and Beijing has not formally announced Xi\'s planned U.S. visit.
The warning comes as the Trump administration weighs the future of a major weapons package for Taiwan while seeking to preserve a broader trade truce with Beijing.
