In recent years, a troubling trend has emerged regarding the online visibility of reviews for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities on platforms like Google Maps. While reviews for local cafes and dry cleaners are commonplace, thousands of reviews detailing the often harrowing experiences of detainees and their families have surfaced, only to be systematically purged by Google. This phenomenon raises critical questions about transparency, censorship, and the role of technology companies in shaping public discourse around immigration enforcement.
Research conducted by Muira McCammon, a professor at Tulane University’s Department of Communication, reveals that Google has actively suppressed narratives related to ICE detention facilities. McCammon has been collecting and analyzing self-reported accounts from individuals who have experienced ICE imprisonment, only to find that nearly all of the reviews she gathered in 2025 have been deleted. “Almost all of the Google reviews that I originally collected are now no longer available,” she stated, highlighting a concerning trend of erasure that impacts the voices of those directly affected by the U.S. deportation system.
