China opens first offshore gold vault and contracts in Hong Kong.

The Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) has opened its first offshore physical gold delivery vault in Hong Kong, as it looks to broaden international participation and amplify China’s expanding role in the global bullion trade.

Trading will be conducted in yuan, with settlement available in cash or physical delivery, supported by a new vault operated by the Bank of China’s Hong Kong branch.

Two contracts, covering different gold purities, are set to launch on Thursday. To promote uptake, the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) is waiving vault storage fees through the end of the year.

China, the world’s biggest producer and consumer of the precious metal, has seen its gold holdings rise to 2,296t, 6.7% of its total foreign exchange reserves.
